Mutual Academic Defense Compacts
AAUP Boulder applauds Boulder Faculty Assembly (BFA) for passing the resolution to create a Mutual Academic Defense Compact. Such compacts are necessary displays of solidarity and defense of institutional values that are under attack. In passing this resolution, CU Boulder has joined our colleagues at Colorado State University, which led the way in Colorado by passing their resolution in May. For a primer on MADCs, please read this opinion piece by the AAUP Colorado conference co-presidents.
However, CU administration has been dismissive of this effort and noncommittal regarding the loyalty compacts solicited by the Trump administration. A unified voice is needed. AAUP Boulder joins the AAUP UCCS chapter, the Colorado Conference of the AAUP, United Campus Workers Colorado, and CWA Local 7799 in endorsing the following CU Faculty Council resolutions, which were introduced at the October meeting and are scheduled for a vote at the November 20 meeting.
- Resolution to Establish a Mutual Defense Compact for Colorado Institutions of Higher Education to Defend Academic Freedom, Institutional Integrity, and the Research Enterprise
- Resolution to Reject Loyalty Oaths
Please encourage your Faculty Council Representatives to vote for these resolutions and encourage colleagues at other CU campuses to talk with their representatives.
